First End-fire Glide Slope Antenna System Installed and Commissioned at Zurich, Switzerland
Herndon, VA: 31 July 2004: Watts Antenna Company, working with its customer, Skyguide, Swiss Air Navigation Services, Ltd., completed optimization and installation of a Model 106 End-fire Glide Slope Antenna System on Runway 34 at Zurich. This system is the first of two end-fire systems to be installed at Zurich.
Watts Antenna Company president, John H. Johnson, Sr., was on-site to consult with Skyguide from July 1 to July 15 at Zurich on the final installation and provide its expertise and guidance for the optimization and flight check of the system. While on site, Mr. Johnson worked conducting in-depth training on the end-fire during system optimization and flight check for Skyguide’s engineering and technical personnel.
“Skyguide and its contractors did an excellent job with the installation of the end-fire system,” Mr. Johnson indicated. “The quality of the installation at Zurich, both the antennas in the field and the interface unit in the underground shelter, allowed us to proceed very efficiently with the tune-up and optimization in preparation for flight inspection.”
In addition, Watts provided consulting services during the flight commissioning, assisting with the successful commissioning of the Model 106 system. The airborne inspection team and flight crew was from FCS Flight Calibration Services GmbH.
In addition to the Model 106 End-fire Glide Slope System commissioned at Zurich, the first Model 106 in Europe, Skyguide has planned for a Model 105 system for another runway at Zurich. Three Model 105 systems have been installed at airports in Norway since 1996.
According to Mr. Johnson, “We are very pleased with this first Model 106 end-fire system in Switzerland and Europe. It has generated additional interest by parties in countries throughout the continent, and we look forward to addressing their difficult site issues with our ILS products.”
